Registered letter in Denmark (anbefalet brev)

Updated

Short answer

A registered letter, in Danish anbefalet or rekommanderet brev, costs DKK 289 incl. VAT with Postly, including printing, envelope and postage. You get dao's hand-in code when the letter is posted, and the delivery receipt when the recipient has signed.

A registered letter is a letter where the delivery is recorded, so you have proof of sending and delivery. Use one when you may need to prove that a letter was sent and when it arrived.

This guide is general information, not advice. You are responsible for what you send.

Anbefalet or rekommanderet: is there a difference?

No. Most Danes say anbefalet brev in everyday speech, while rekommanderet brev is the formal term used by the postal sector and in legal documents. Both mean a letter where delivery to the recipient is recorded.

You do not pay for faster delivery. You pay for proof of actual delivery, or of the delivery attempts made.

When do you need a registered letter?

When you may need to prove that the letter was sent and delivered, for example:

  • Terminating a rental lease, where a deadline can be decisive.
  • Disputing a landlord's move-out statement or claiming your deposit (depositum) back.
  • Resigning from a job, or terminating a contract or a subscription that cannot be ended online.
  • Letters in a dispute where the other side may deny having received anything.

dao in a daoSHOP or Postly

Both end with a registered letter delivered by dao. The difference is what you do yourself, and what proof you get.

How the delivery receipt works

dao sends the delivery receipt to Postly when the recipient has signed for the letter. We forward it to you as soon as we have it. When that happens depends on when the recipient receives or collects the letter.

Because Postly hands the letter in at dao, dao's documents may show Postly (GN) as the sender. The letter is still sent on your behalf. With dao's receipt you also get a dispatch declaration from Postly that links the receipt to your order with order number, hand-in code, date and you as the sender.

If the letter cannot be delivered, dao tries twice and then returns it with proof of the attempts. That does not prove that the recipient actually received it.

What does it cost?

With Postly, a registered letter costs DKK 289 incl. VAT anywhere in Denmark, including printing, envelope, postage and posting. The first 5 pages are included; extra pages cost DKK 5 each.

How it works with Postly

You need no printer, envelopes, stamps or account, and ordering takes a few minutes.

  • Upload a PDF, or type the text directly. The letter can be in English or any other language.
  • Fill in sender and recipient. We only send to addresses in Denmark.
  • Choose a standard or a registered letter.
  • Pay by card or MobilePay. We print the letter, put it in an envelope and post it.

When is the letter posted?

If the letter is paid before noon on a weekday, we hand it to dao the same day. Otherwise we post it the next weekday. After that, dao's delivery times apply. We cannot guarantee a specific delivery day, and Postly is not part of dao.

Frequently asked questions

Can I send a registered letter online in Denmark?+

Yes. With Postly you upload a PDF or type the text, and we print, envelope and hand the letter to dao as registered for DKK 289 incl. VAT. You get dao's hand-in code and the delivery receipt forwarded.

What is the difference between a standard and a registered letter?+

With a registered letter the delivery is recorded, so you have proof. A standard letter is cheaper, but there is no receipt for delivery.

Why does Postly appear on dao's receipt?+

Postly hands the letter in at dao, so dao's documents may show Postly (GN) as the sender. The letter is still sent on your behalf, and you get a dispatch declaration from Postly that links the receipt to your order.

What if the recipient does not collect the letter?+

dao tries delivery twice and then returns the letter with proof of the attempts. There is no delivery receipt, but the hand-in code still documents that the letter was handed in to dao.
