Terminating a rental lease in Denmark
Updated
Short answer
A termination of a lease (opsigelse af lejemål) must be in writing. The notice period depends on your rental contract and the type of tenancy, so check the contract first. Sending the notice as a registered letter gives you proof of sending and delivery, and the notice must reach the landlord before the deadline.
Leaving your rental home in Denmark, or leaving the country? Here is what to check before you give notice, why many tenants send it as a letter, and what happens when you move out.
This guide is general information, not legal advice. Contracts and agreements can have other rules. Check your own contract and get advice if you are unsure. You are responsible for what you send.

Send your notice as a registered letterCheck your contract first
The notice period (opsigelsesvarsel) depends on the rental contract (lejekontrakt) and the type of tenancy. Write down the notice period and any special terms before you choose the end date.
A fixed-term or non-terminable agreement (tidsbegrænset or uopsigelig) may not be possible to end yet. Check the contract, and get advice if you are unsure.
If the home is the family home, your spouse's consent may be relevant.
Email or letter?
As a rule you can give notice by email, but check your contract's requirements and any limits on digital communication. Make sure the notice reaches the landlord before the relevant deadline.
A letter by post gives you extra proof if there is disagreement later about when, or whether, the landlord received it. A registered letter records sending and delivery. Send it in good time and follow the delivery status: a delivery attempt is not the same as proven receipt.
What to write in the notice
- Your name and current address, and the landlord's name and address.
- The address of the home you are leaving.
- The date the tenancy ends, and the date you plan to hand over the keys if that is earlier.
- The notice period and terms you have checked in the contract.
- A request for written confirmation that the landlord has received the notice.
A Danish template
Want the letter in Danish? Our free lease termination template (opsigelse af lejemål) writes it for you. Fill in the fields, and send it as a registered letter in the same step.
Moving out
Landlords who rent out more than one flat must inspect it within 2 weeks of learning that you have moved out, and must invite you in writing at least 1 week ahead. The landlord must make a move-out report (fraflytningsrapport) at the inspection (Danish Rent Act, lejeloven § 187).
If you disagree with the landlord's final statement, you can object in writing. Our Danish template for objecting to a move-out statement is at indsigelse mod fraflytningsopgørelse.
